The differences between hollow glass and double-glazed glass

Double-glazed glass is a deep-processing product made by separating two or more flat panes of glass with a spacer frame around the edges and sealing them tightly with a specialized sealant, creating a space between the glass layers filled with dry gas.
It’s important to note that the edges of double-glazed units are rigorously sealed with high-quality sealant, while the interior cavity is filled with either dry air or an inert gas—both of which are permanently trapped inside, preventing any exchange with external air. As a result, heat transfer between the two sides of the glass occurs primarily through conduction, rather than convection caused by air movement within the cavity. Additionally, since air is a poor conductor of heat, the two glass panes separated by this sealed gas layer minimize thermal bridging, effectively enhancing the glass’s insulating performance.
Additionally, when there’s a significant temperature difference between the two sides of insulated glass, since each pane only experiences the temperature on its own side, the two surfaces of a single pane won’t develop a large temperature gradient. Therefore, as long as the temperature difference between the inside and outside of the insulated glass isn’t excessively high (e.g., ≥100°C), condensation or frost formation will not occur.
One more point to note: insulated glass is not vacuum-sealed—instead, the gas pressure within the cavity remains nearly equal to the external atmospheric pressure. If this balance were disrupted, the glass would likely shatter easily.
From the explanation above, it’s clear that there’s an essential difference between insulated glass and conventional double-glazed windows. The most fundamental distinction lies in the fact that insulated glass is sealed, while double-glazed windows are not. Precisely because double-glazed windows aren’t airtight, dust and moisture can easily penetrate into the space between the panes. When cold temperatures hit, moisture condenses into frost; in warmer conditions, it forms condensation instead. Meanwhile, the dust clinging to the inner surface of the glass remains stubbornly unmoved, making the window appear cloudy and grimy shortly after installation. Of course, double-glazed windows do offer some level of soundproofing and insulation, but their performance still falls far short compared to insulated glass.
