What should you do if the glass in your doors and windows is fogged up with condensation?

If your home still has old-fashioned PVC double-glazed windows and doors, you’ve likely encountered several issues—such as drafts, leaks, poor sound insulation, or even condensation forming between the two panes of glass. These are common problems with older-style PVC windows and doors.
Why is there condensation between the double panes of glass?
  1. First of all, back then, the older-style plastic-steel double-glazed windows didn’t have today’s advanced technology—they were simply made by joining two panes of glass together, with a double-sided sealant used in the middle. Unfortunately, this material wasn’t waterproof or fully airtight, so when moisture accumulated inside the window frame, it would eventually evaporate and seep into the double glazing. As a result, condensation would form inside the double-layered glass, leaving a hazy, foggy film of water vapor visible between the panes.
  2. Secondly, if this occurs with modern double-glazed windows, it can only mean that the glass sealant around the edges wasn’t applied properly or has developed leaks. Another possibility is the use of low-quality glass sealant. Beyond these two scenarios, there are no other potential causes for this outcome.
So, how can we solve the issue of condensation forming between the glass panes in doors and windows?
  1. If you have older-style PVC doors and windows, the only option is to replace them with modern double-glazed glass units. However, there’s still a noticeable difference between those old PVC windows and today’s models—specifically, the sealing strips and pressure lines may not align properly. If compatibility isn’t an issue, simply upgrading to modern double-glazed glass can suffice. Still, replacing the glass itself comes with a significant cost. In cases where it’s truly necessary, though, it’s often better to go for a full replacement of the doors and windows altogether. Opting for the latest-generation thermal-break aluminum frames would be the ideal choice, as they deliver superior performance in terms of insulation, heat retention, and soundproofing.
  2. If you have new-style doors and windows—or specifically, broken-bridge aluminum doors and windows—and encounter this issue, simply contact the manufacturer to replace the insulated glass unit.
