1. Judging by appearance
To check the sealant strip, examine its surface for smoothness, evenness, absence of impurities, air bubbles, or jagged edges. 2. Judging by Hand Feel
High-quality window and door sealing strips feel smooth and soft to the touch, while inferior ones have a grainy, rough texture and lack flexibility. When gently stretched by hand, they should not tear easily. Additionally, when bent and released, they quickly snap back into shape—signifying excellent elasticity and resilience. Lastly, there’s no detectable aromatic odor when you bring your nose close to the material.
In contrast, low-quality, high-filled soft PVC sealing strips are brittle: they crack with just one fold and break apart with minimal pulling force.
3. Judging by the smell
High-quality sealing strips are made from EPDM rubber, which emits no unpleasant odors when smelled—making them environmentally friendly, green, and completely pollution-free. In contrast, inferior sealing strips not only have a strong, pungent odor but also contain highly irritating compounds that can seriously harm human health. This is because substandard strips are typically crafted from PVC, and during the manufacturing process, low-grade or even recycled waste materials are often mixed in. To achieve the desired softness and tactile feel of premium strips, these cheaper versions frequently rely heavily on low-molecular-weight paraffin oil and complex, impure waste oil residues as substitutes for traditional plasticizers. Unfortunately, these volatile additives release intense, sharp-smelling fumes over time. As these harmful components continue to evaporate, the inferior PVC seals rapidly lose their flexibility, becoming stiff and brittle—ultimately failing to effectively seal doors and windows.
4. Judging by elasticity
High-quality EPDM rubber sealing strips—soft, highly elastic, and capable of stretching nearly twice their original length without breaking, while quickly returning to their original shape when released.
