Steps for Installing Sliding Doors and Important Considerations

As housing prices rise, people are increasingly opting for space-saving solutions when it comes to home renovations—and sliding doors have emerged as the top choice for interior doors. Beyond their practical use in wardrobes and walk-in closets, sliding doors also add a stylish touch to spaces like living rooms, kitchens, and even balconies. In fact, balconies are one of the most common areas where sliding doors are installed. But what should you keep in mind when installing a sliding door on your balcony? And how exactly do you go about the installation process?
Steps for Installing Sliding Doors
1. Suspended sliding doors are challenging to install because the track box is fitted before the tiles are laid, leaving an awkward joint where the exposed track box meets the tile—this area can be difficult to finish properly. Additionally, since the track bears significant pressure, the tiles adjacent to it may also experience stress over time, making them prone to cracking. Moreover, in spaces like kitchens and bathrooms, the track box tends to trap dirt and grime; grease, smoke, and dust easily accumulate there, complicating cleaning efforts.
2. The track box at the top of the sliding door should measure 12 cm in height and 9 cm in width. Similar to a curtain box, the track is installed inside the box, allowing the sliding door to hang effortlessly on the rails. Nowadays, most doors or doorways typically range from 1.95 to 2.15 meters in height. Experience has shown that when a door falls below 1.95 meters, it can feel cramped and uncomfortable for people of any height. Therefore, when designing a sliding door, ensure the minimum height is at least 195 cm + 12 cm = 207 cm—only then will there be enough space to properly install the track box. Otherwise, you’ll have no choice but to opt for an external hanging system, where the track box remains visible, which certainly isn’t aesthetically pleasing. Over time, this setup may also lead to wider gaps forming between the door and the wall.
3. The width of sliding doors matters. Typically, the ideal dimensions for a standard door are around 80 cm by 200 cm, as this size ensures relative stability. However, if you’re planning to install sliding doors with heights exceeding 200 cm—or even taller— it’s best to either narrow the door’s width while keeping the overall area unchanged, or opt for multiple sliding doors instead. This approach helps maintain both the door’s stability and user safety.
4. Use floor-to-ceiling sliding doors (with exposed track boxes) with caution. Over time, the excessive swinging motion during operation can cause these doors to warp. Once warped, the door may become permanently stuck and unusable—rendering it irreparable.
5. Since the sliding door comes into contact with the walls or sides of the cabinet, ensure that no other objects obstruct its closing at these points. For instance, drawers inside the cabinet should be positioned away from where the sliding door intersects, and they must sit at least 25 inches above the bottom panel. Additionally, pay close attention to wall-mounted power switches and outlets within the folding-door cabinet—if they block the door from closing, consider repositioning the switches and outlets accordingly.
6. Regardless of the flooring material you choose, ensure it’s perfectly level—both the walls surrounding the doorway and the doorway itself must remain horizontal and vertical. Otherwise, the door may become skewed after installation. Any adjustable misalignment should not exceed 10mm.
7. At the installation location, please avoid installing baseboards. Instead, gypsum moldings can be mounted on the capping board above the wall cabinets. However, if the doors extend all the way to the ceiling, gypsum moldings should not be installed.
8. For carpets thinner than 5 mm, simply cut out the carpet at the installation location and glue it directly onto the lower rail. For carpets thicker than 5 mm, if installing a double rail system, you can securely fasten the carpet to the rails using screws. However, if opting for a single rail, you’ll need to first remove the carpet from that area and insert a wooden strip measuring 3–5 mm thick, creating a stable base before gluing the single rail directly onto it.
9. At the junctions where wood flooring meets tiles—commonly seen between balconies and living rooms, as well as between bedrooms and living rooms—the following solutions can be applied:
① Try to install the bottom rail entirely on one material type whenever possible.
② Alternatively, add an additional wooden or marble strip—matching the width of the bottom rail—to create a seamless transition between the two materials. For kitchen areas, threshold stones can also be used effectively.
