A nanny was cleaning the windows when, accidentally, she knocked over an entire window frame. Tragically, disaster struck—just as an 11-year-old teenage girl was walking below, a piece of glass from the fallen frame fell and fatally struck her. This heartbreaking incident occurred on the morning of June 18 in downtown Zhuhai, where a glass window frame plummeted from a high-rise residential building onto the street, claiming the life of the unsuspecting passerby.
The girl who was struck was confirmed dead by the time the emergency doctor arrived.
The building where the incident occurred
Preliminary investigations reveal that the glass fell from a unit on the 21st floor of Building 2, Hengfu Pavilion, on Leyuan Road. Currently, the individuals responsible at the residence are being questioned by public security authorities. Tragically, the young girl who died was just 11 years old and attended elementary school.
Witness: The child lay on the zebra crossing, covered in blood.
Later, reporters on the scene learned that the residential unit is a street-facing home located on Fenghuang Beiyuan Road in Zhuhai’s central urban area—right next to the busy road. The ground floor of the building houses storefronts open to the street. At the time of the incident, a family of three sisters who lived nearby happened to be walking along the sidewalk beneath the building when an 11-year-old girl was tragically struck by debris and lost her life.
Scene of the incident
According to the deceased's younger brother, they left for class together around 10 a.m. after breakfast. As they were crossing the zebra crossing on the road in front of the apartment complex where the incident occurred, their middle sister—walking in the middle of the trio—was suddenly struck and knocked down by an object that had fallen from above.
Witness Mr. Luo recounted that he had just finished his morning tea at Hengfu Pavilion’s teahouse and was walking out when he heard a loud explosion in the distance. Rushing over to investigate, he found a windowpane—along with its frame—shattered on the ground, while a young girl lay motionless on the zebra crossing, covered in blood. Nearby, a brother and sister were visibly shaken, bursting into tears. Mr. Luo quickly checked to see if the injured girl was still breathing, though her condition appeared critical. Realizing she was still alive but severely hurt, he immediately dialed the emergency number 120 for medical assistance.
When the 120 emergency medical team arrived on the scene, Mr. Luo quickly gathered several ice cream cones from the roadside to set up a cordon, securing the area and even stepping in as an ad-hoc traffic controller. But just minutes later, when the 120 doctors finally reached the spot, they found it was already too late—regrettably, the young girl who had been struck had already passed away.
On the 21st floor, a window frame was accidentally knocked loose by the resident's maid while she was cleaning the windows. It turns out the broken glass and frame fell from a home on the 21st floor of a building within the same residential complex. At the time, the maid was wiping down the window and, in an attempt to reach the outside of the glass, inadvertently caused the entire pane—including the surrounding frame—to come crashing down.
After the incident was reported by Zhuhai Public Security's official Weibo account, many netizens expressed heartfelt sympathy for the young girl's misfortune. At the same time, people across the board voiced growing concerns over the frequent occurrences of objects falling from high-rise buildings. A resident in Zhuhai even shared that a similar incident—where window glass fell from her building—had already happened in her own community, though fortunately no one was hurt. Some netizens advised residents living on higher floors to remain extra cautious at all times, emphasizing the importance of keeping household items securely stored to prevent them from accidentally falling and causing harm. Additionally, they urged homeowners to promptly repair or replace poorly constructed door frames to ensure safety.
When you do something repeatedly over time, you tend to either avoid potential problems altogether or simply dismiss them—just like with many of our high-level clients who insisted on having windows that open outward, claiming it wouldn’t take up indoor space. But we usually decline such requests—or strongly recommend inward-opening or inward-swinging/tilt-and-turn designs instead. The reason is simple: safety!
