A well-utilized balcony can maximize a home’s architectural space—whether for relaxation and entertainment, enjoying scenic views from above, drying clothes, or even creating a lush green oasis with plants. Yet, it also serves as a large "window" to the outside world, directly connecting residents to the outdoors. While lower-floor units may worry about break-ins, higher floors must contend with strong winds—and that’s precisely why installing secure balcony windows is essential. But here’s the real question: what kind of doors and windows should you choose? That’s the key!
Currently, most balcony window enclosure users opt for either sliding or casement-style windows, but each type has its own unique features—this opinion is for reference only!
Ventilation: The top-hung casement window is also a type of casement opening mechanism that allows natural air circulation between indoors and outdoors while effectively preventing rainwater from entering the room, making it highly ventilative. Similarly, sliding windows enable natural airflow between indoor and outdoor spaces, keeping the air fresh—but unlike the top-hung design, they don’t completely eliminate the risk of rainwater seeping in, though ventilation remains excellent.
Security is significantly enhanced with casement windows, thanks to the interconnected hardware and handles arranged around the window sash, enabling a variety of indoor operations. When closed, the sash is securely locked into the window frame on all sides, making these windows highly resistant to break-ins and offering excellent anti-theft performance. In contrast, sliding windows rely on very basic hardware—typically featuring a central hook or push-lock mechanism for single-point locking—which simply cannot provide the same level of protection against intruders. For instance, while it might take a thief up to 15 minutes to pry open a casement window, breaking into a sliding window could take as little as one minute.
Practicality: The top-hung casement window avoids the inconvenience of inward-opening windows, which take up indoor space and make it difficult to hang curtains or install adjustable clothes rails. In contrast, sliding windows allow for easy installation of both curtains and adjustable clothes rails without any interference.
Operationally, the cleaning process for casement windows is straightforward: simply use the integrated handle to pivot the window sash outward into the room. This makes it both convenient and safe to clean the exterior surface of the window. In contrast, sliding windows have their glass retaining strips positioned entirely on the interior side, making it easy to replace broken glass. However, cleaning the outer surface of sliding windows can be more challenging—especially in areas where the sashes overlap when open.
