What’s the purpose of the thickness of the glass spacer in doors and windows?

Properly configuring window and door glass is a crucial aspect, as it significantly impacts performance. By carefully selecting the thickness of the glass air gaps between windows and doors, you can minimize energy transfer via radiation—thereby reducing overall energy loss.
Convective heat transfer occurs because a temperature difference exists across the two sides of the glass, causing air to descend on the cooler side and rise on the warmer side, thus creating air circulation and leading to energy loss.
There are several reasons for this phenomenon:
1. Poor sealing between the glass and the surrounding frame system allows direct gas exchange between the inside and outside of the window frame, creating air convection and resulting in energy loss.
2. The unreasonable internal space design of door and window glass leads to convection currents within the glass, driven by temperature differences. These currents facilitate energy exchange, ultimately resulting in heat loss.
3. The significant temperature difference between the inside and outside of the windows that make up the entire system also leads to a large temperature gap across the glass surfaces of doors and windows, causing air movement driven by both cold radiation and heat conduction.
Proper window and door glass design can reduce gas convection, thereby minimizing energy loss due to convection.
