What is the purpose of door and window subframes? Is it necessary to install them?

Warren's Tmall flagship store sees many customers asking the same question every day: "Do I need a secondary frame for my window? And what exactly is it used for? Is installing a secondary frame even necessary?" Customer service representatives patiently explain to customers each day that not all windows require a secondary frame—each case needs to be evaluated individually. For instance, in homes where kitchen or bathroom windows are fitted with tiles around the window opening after installation, it’s crucial to communicate clearly with the designer during the on-site measurement. This ensures the designer leaves enough space for the secondary frame, preventing issues like the window becoming impossible to open once the tiles are fully installed. After all, nobody wants to run into such a frustrating situation, right?
Also, do the windows in the living room and bedroom open along their lower edges? And will the designers consider installing a windowsill stone or marble along those edges? It’s important for our designer to be clearly informed about this during the on-site measurement visit—otherwise, there’s a risk that after the windowsill is installed, you might find the windows can no longer open. What then?
Perhaps you still don’t quite grasp what I’ve been trying to explain all this time—so, fine! Let me simply sketch a quick diagram. I hope the image will clearly convey my point. Take a look:

As shown in the image above: This is the solution—mentioned earlier by Xiao Pian—where tiling around the window openings in the kitchen and bathroom could potentially prevent the windows from opening. Installing a secondary frame, however, effectively resolves this issue.

On the left side of this image is the previously mentioned issue where the windowsill stone might interfere with the smooth operation of the window sash. The middle picture illustrates how an auxiliary frame can effectively resolve this problem. Meanwhile, the right-hand image shows what happens if the windowsill stone ends up blocking the window sash—and if, during the initial measurement phase, there wasn’t enough space reserved for installing the auxiliary frame. In such a case, the only option would be to chip away part of the cement wall at the bottom of the window. However, we strongly advise against this approach: not only is it time-consuming and labor-intensive, but it also carries a high risk of damaging the wall irreparably. Moreover, if, during the demolition process, you happen to hit a few critical centimeters where reinforcing steel bars are embedded, well, good luck calling for help—neither heaven nor earth will respond! So, dear homeowners, always remember to clarify all details thoroughly before proceeding with any project!
