How to tell the quality of silicone sealant

High-quality silicone sealant is a chemically synthesized material that has been thoroughly and evenly mixed, resulting in a细腻, uniform texture. Once applied and cured, it delivers a smooth, sleek, and glossy finish. In contrast, inferior silicone sealants often contain visible particles and impurities, and after curing, their surface lacks the smoothness and evenness of higher-quality products.
Smelling the odor (suitable for acidic adhesives)
Acidic adhesives contain acetic acid, which releases a slightly sour odor as it evaporates. However, generally speaking, the higher the quality of the adhesive, the milder the acidic smell; conversely, lower-quality adhesives tend to have a stronger, more pungent odor (due to their higher acetic acid content). Additionally, high-quality adhesives lose their characteristic scent quickly during the curing process, while low-quality ones retain their acidic aroma for a much longer time.
More than gloss
The glossiness varies depending on the quality of the adhesive—high-quality adhesives produce a strong, vibrant sheen after curing, while lower-quality ones may lack any noticeable shine right out of the tube. In some cases, inferior adhesives even appear dull immediately after application, and in others, they lose their luster entirely within just a month or two after curing.

Watch the bubbles
High-quality silicone sealant is primarily made of pure silicone, with only trace amounts of other additives. Pure silicone boasts excellent stability, remaining largely unaffected by external environmental changes during storage—and when applied, it prevents the characteristic "pop" or bubbling sound caused by air trapped inside the tube.
However, inferior silicone sealants often contain less than 100% silicone, and the additives mixed into the silicone can sometimes chemically react with the PE material of the sealant tube itself. This reaction may cause the tube to swell or deform, increasing its height and creating tiny gaps where air can seep in. As a result, when you apply the sealant, you’ll hear those annoying "pop" or bubbling noises.
Moreover, these low-quality products can significantly shorten their shelf life. In some cases, even more egregious practices occur: a few manufacturers deliberately place the bottom cap directly at the very base of the tube while leaving an air pocket in the middle, drastically reducing the actual amount of sealant dispensed. Naturally, this leads to inevitable air bubbles in the squeezed-out product.
Check the curing effect
After applying the sealant locally, first check the glass adhesive's surface-drying time according to the instructions on the product packaging. If the drying time is too short or significantly exceeds the recommended duration, it may indicate a quality issue with the adhesive (though environmental conditions should also be taken into account). Once the adhesive has fully cured—note that the manufacturer should always specify the curing time—test its hardness and elasticity by hand. Adhesives that are either too hard or too soft aren’t ideal. Additionally, you can cut open a section of the cured adhesive to assess whether the curing process is consistent throughout, both inside and out.
Test tensile and adhesive forces
The tensile strength and peel resistance (i.e., adhesion) of cured silicone sealant also vary depending on the quality of the silicone itself. High-quality sealants exhibit exceptionally strong tensile strength, allowing for significant stretching, while their peel resistance remains robust. In contrast, lower-quality sealants show weaker tensile performance, limited stretchability, and reduced peel resistance.
