Tips for Removing Glass Glue

For glass sealant, like most adhesive substances, it’s relatively easy to remove before it fully cures. Before curing, whether it’s on clothing or surfaces, simply applying a bit of water and gently wiping it off will do the trick.
When removing silicone sealant that has stuck to glass, be sure to use the right technique—just gently scrape it off with a knife. But remember to apply minimal pressure while scraping to avoid damaging the glass.
Of course, glass adhesives from different brands vary in their properties. For instance, there are two main types—acidic and neutral glass adhesives—and they contain entirely different chemicals. Therefore, you can’t use the same removal method for both; otherwise, you might end up with unexpected and regrettable results.
How to remove glass glue from your hands
Of course, during the renovation process, it’s common for glass glue to stick to your hands—and that can be quite a hassle. Naturally, everyone handles this situation differently, leading to varying degrees of effectiveness in dealing with it.
Once the glass glue has fully cured, it no longer sticks firmly to your hands, so simply rubbing your hands together a few times will easily remove it. If the glue hasn’t yet hardened, use a clean cloth dipped in acetone, xylene, or No. 120 solvent oil (all three of these solvents are readily available at chemical supply stores; most shops even carry acetone).
Currently, glass adhesive cleaners are still available on the market—just pick up a bottle during your renovation project, and you can easily wipe it off whenever needed. If the glass adhesive has already hardened and stuck to the glass, simply scrape it off smoothly with a blade.
