When it comes to window and door design, if you don’t know the basics, you’re totally out of touch!

Doors and windows are the most basic fixtures in a typical home—and they’re also the most critical factors influencing natural light, ventilation, and overall comfort. So, are you familiar with the design standards for doors and windows?
Windowsill height
In typical residential buildings, the window sill height must be at least 0.9 meters; if the window sill is lower than 0.8 meters, protective measures should be implemented. In public buildings, the window sill height typically ranges from 1.0 to 1.8 meters, and for window sashes opening onto public corridors, the bottom edge must be no lower than 2.0 meters above the floor.
Window height
In typical residential buildings, windows are usually 1.5 meters high. Adding the window sill height of 0.9 meters brings the top of the window to 2.4 meters above the floor. The height of the window should be determined based on factors such as daylighting, ventilation, and the desired spatial aesthetic—but it’s important to consider potential rigidity issues if the window becomes too tall. If necessary, additional horizontal beams or "window framing" can be installed to reinforce the structure.
Window width
Window widths typically start at 0.6 meters. According to building standards and opening specifications, the standard width moduli for architectural openings are 300 mm—meaning common widths include 600 mm, 900 mm, 1200 mm, 1500 mm, and so on. It’s important to note that when window openings become excessively wide, vertical studs or "mullions" should be added; otherwise, the window may suffer from structural rigidity issues.
The height of the door
Doors intended for pedestrian passage should generally be at least 2 meters high, though they shouldn’t exceed 2.4 meters—higher than that can create an unsettling sense of emptiness. Additionally, the door panels themselves will need extra reinforcement to handle the added height. If design aesthetics, ventilation, or natural lighting are required, you can incorporate a waist window into the door, starting from a height of 0.4 meters—but again, it’s best not to make it too tall.
The width of the door
Typical residential door widths range from 0.9 to 1 meter for entry doors, 0.8 to 0.9 meters for room doors, around 0.8 meters for kitchen doors, and 0.7 to 0.8 meters for bathroom doors. Nowadays, the upper end of these dimensions is often chosen to accommodate the easy movement of modern furniture.
Window and Door Maintenance
Windows and doors should be regularly cleaned to remove dust, ensuring that the frames, glass, and hardware remain clean and shiny. If the surfaces become stained with stubborn residues like oil, it’s best to avoid using strong acids or strong alkaline solutions for cleaning. Doing so could not only compromise the smooth finish of the profiles but also damage the protective coating and oxidation layer on the hardware, ultimately leading to rust formation.
When opening or closing doors and windows, apply moderate force and try to maintain a consistent speed throughout the process. Avoid hitting the doors or windows with hard objects, and take care not to scratch the surface of the profiles.
Ensure that any granular debris inside the frame is promptly cleaned to prevent clogging of the drainage channels, which could lead to poor water flow and leaks. If you notice that doors or windows become difficult to open or close smoothly, or if other abnormalities occur during use, identify the cause immediately. If the customer is unable to resolve the issue on their own, they should contact the window and door manufacturer or supplier to ensure the problem is addressed promptly.
