Although window and door installation isn’t done by yourself, it’s still important to understand a few key considerations. What may seem like a straightforward task—window and door fitting—actually involves numerous details that require attention. So, let’s dive in together with the editor to explore everything you need to know about window and door renovations!

  1. Excessively large gaps around doors and windows
During the renovation, the carpenter left too much gap during planing and trimming, or perhaps the installation wasn’t perfectly vertical to the floor. In either case, you can remove the doors and windows, refinish them until they fit snugly, and then reinstall them to ensure they’re properly aligned vertically. If maintaining perfect verticality proves tricky, simply place shims beneath the door or window frames to help achieve a straight, level position.
  2. Hardware components improperly installed
If the hinges of a swing door are misaligned, it can also cause uneven alignment between the frame and the door/window. To fix this, simply tighten the screws securing the door, then adjust the tilt of the door/window to ensure everything aligns neatly. Be careful not to overtighten the screws, as this can make adjustments difficult later on. If you tighten them too much at once, the door/window might end up either too tight or too loose, resulting in an unstable, wobbly feel. When installing the screws, keep them straight—start by partially screwing them in, and then finish tightening them securely.
  3. The door panel doesn’t open or close smoothly
Usually, the issue stems from the door latch being installed incorrectly or the shape of the locking mechanism not fitting properly. But the biggest reason is that the latch isn’t aligned with the strike plate—so be sure to mark their positions carefully before installation.
  4. Sliding door is difficult to push and pull
Typically, the cause is that the upper and lower track grooves aren’t aligned vertically—or rather, aren’t perfectly vertical relative to each other. To fix this, you can first remove the tracks, then use a precision ruler to ensure the centers of the upper and lower tracks align properly with the groove centers.
  5. Window and Door Leakage Issues
Leaks are occurring at the junctions between the door and window frames and the surrounding walls, and water is accumulating in the sliding window tracks, seeping into the interior of the windows.
We should pay attention to the following points:
  1. Window and door frames must not be sealed into the wall with cement mortar. Instead, they should be connected elastically and tightly filled with sealant to ensure there are no gaps.
  2. If the window sash seals are installed improperly, water may seep in through the gaps between the sash glass and the frame. Before installation, check whether the frame and sash fit tightly together and ensure that the sash seals are properly installed.
  3. If the window frame lacks drainage holes, water leakage may occur. Drainage holes should be drilled at the bottom of the outer frame and along the track base.
