In the 21st century, as housing prices soar, second-hand homes have become the preferred choice for most homebuyers. However, when it comes to renovating these properties, people often overlook the most hidden dangers—starting with potential issues related to doors and windows! Here are six effective strategies to help you sidestep these hidden pitfalls during your second-hand home renovation.

1. Trick #1: Test the waterproofing system before renovating a second-hand home
A 24- to 48-hour water retention test should be conducted in the bathroom and kitchen to inspect the quality of the existing waterproofing work. If any leaks are detected, the waterproofing must be redone immediately.
  2. Trick #2: Before renovating a second-hand home, try to disinfect it first.
Before renovating a resale home, it's essential to thoroughly disinfect the entire house. You can use a 1%-3% bleach solution or spray it with a 3% peracetic acid solution. After spraying, close all doors and windows for 1 hour.
  3. Trick #3: Old galvanized pipes must be replaced.
When renovating a resale property, it's essential to thoroughly inspect the existing plumbing system. Often, the original pipe layout contains many impractical or inefficient designs, so check for signs of rust and aging. If the original piping still uses outdated galvanized steel pipes, they must be completely replaced during the renovation with either aluminum-plastic composite pipes, copper pipes, or PP-R pipes.
  4. Trick Four: Repair the wall's base and cracks using cement mortar.
Before starting the renovation, it’s best to have a professional conduct an on-site inspection of the house. If you notice obvious cracks, uneven surfaces, or areas with peeling and flaking on the walls, floors, or ceilings, these should be repaired promptly. After patching, apply a coat of primer to ensure full coverage, followed by a fresh coat of latex paint.

5th Tip: Aging wiring is a hidden hazard—best to rewire entirely.
Second-hand homes often suffer from issues such as simple circuit layouts, aging wiring, and improper wiring practices. Therefore, during renovations, a thorough overhaul is essential, including completely rewiring the entire electrical system. If the existing wiring is found to be made of aluminum, it must all be replaced with copper wires of at least 2.5 square millimeters in cross-section. Additionally, for circuits installed to accommodate high-power appliances like air conditioners, a separate line with a 4-square-millimeter cross-section should be dedicated—ensuring that PVC-insulated conduit is used during the wiring process to protect the cables.

  6. Trick No. 6: Replacing old doors and windows is the key to renovating a resale property.
This is often the most overlooked aspect of home renovation, yet for second-hand property upgrades, aging doors and windows are a significant issue—raising concerns related to health, safety, and even security against intruders. However, if the materials remain sturdy and the design hasn’t gone out of style, simply repainting them can extend their lifespan. On the other hand, if wooden doors and windows start peeling or warping, it’s a clear sign that the wood itself has undergone structural changes, making them unsafe to use. In such cases, replacing the doors and windows with new ones is absolutely essential.
