A Basic Introduction to and the Making of Door and Window Casings

Before installation, all types of door and window frames should first be inspected to ensure that the dimensions of the预留 openings meet the design requirements, as well as to verify whether the quality of previous construction processes satisfies the installation needs. Additionally, the base of any embedded components must be thoroughly checked for stability and reliability—and installation should only proceed after the plastering work on the ceiling, walls, and floor has been completed.
As the year draws to a close, many friends are rushing to tackle home renovations—my own circle is no exception, with several people already gearing up to freshen up their homes for the New Year. However, since most of them are new to home decorating, they’re often confused about what exactly "door and window casings" are. So, let me take this opportunity to explain what door and window casings are—and how they’re made!
What is a door and window casing?
Door and window casings are used to protect and decorate door and window frames. They typically consist of a jamb and a face, which are attached directly to the wall. For example, a door or window casing includes two sides: the jamb refers to side A, while the face refers to side B.
Door and window surrounds are vertical surfaces on both sides of the door or window opening, either projecting outward to create a frame or aligning flush with the exterior wall. They must not only be vertically straight and smoothly finished but also seamlessly blend with the surrounding wall surface—hence, their manufacturing quality demands meticulous attention to detail.
The main functions of door and window frames are protection and decoration.
Door and Window Frame Fabrication and Installation
Locate positions and mark lines: Before installation, carefully determine the elevation, planar location, and vertical dimensions according to the design drawings, then use chalk lines to mark them accurately.
Verify embedded parts and openings: For door and window casing installation projects that include embedded parts or wooden blocks, check after marking the lines whether the embedded parts and wooden blocks meet the design specifications.
Keel and Baseboard Fabrication and Installation: Based on the actual dimensions of the opening, fabricate the keel framework or baseboards in three pre-cut sections according to the designed section specifications—typically one section for the top of the opening and two sections for the sides. Each keel section usually consists of two vertical frame members; however, if the width of the door or window casing exceeds 500 mm, additional vertical frame members should be added appropriately in the middle. The spacing between horizontal keels should not exceed 400 mm, while for panel widths greater than 500 mm, the horizontal keel spacing should be limited to no more than 300 mm.
Panel Installation:
Before panel installation, inspect the location, straightness, and secure fastening of the furring strips or substrate boards, as well as compliance with moisture-proofing requirements. Proceed with installation only after confirming everything meets the necessary standards.
After the panels are assembled, a trial installation is carried out to ensure that the panel dimensions, seams, and joint structures fit perfectly. Only when the texture direction and color appearance are also visually appealing can the panels proceed to formal installation.
At the joints of the plywood panels, apply glue and securely nail the panels to the furring strips. Ensure that the nails used for fastening the panels are appropriately sized—ideally, their length should be about 2 to 2.5 times the thickness of the panel. The typical nail spacing is 100 mm. Additionally, flatten the heads of the wooden nails slightly, then use a pointed punch to drive the flattened heads flush with the panel surface, sinking them about 1–2 mm below the wood grain.
