Recently, many friends have been reaching out to us in the background with various questions about window replacement. Today, the editor will provide a comprehensive answer specifically addressing household window replacement issues!
Why replace the windows?
Have you ever paid attention to the performance of your home’s doors and windows? Are your windows failing to provide adequate soundproofing, insulation, or even letting in drafts—or worse, causing leaks? If your doors and windows are experiencing any of these issues, it’s definitely time to consider replacing them.
Since the nation called for energy conservation and emission reduction, energy-efficient doors and windows have gained increasing popularity. Replacing old windows with energy-efficient ones makes perfect sense—whether it’s about enhancing the city’s overall commitment to sustainable living or helping individual families achieve both energy savings and the comfort they desire.
Prominent issues with old and standard doors and windows
1. Smog Intrusion
On days with outdoor smog, even with windows and doors tightly sealed, tiny particles and harmful substances can still sneak indoors, making it impossible to breathe freely at home.
2. Poor thermal insulation
In summer, hot air can’t be kept out, and in winter, heat escapes quickly—especially since older windows often suffer from poor sealing, leading to drafts and even water leaks. This results in significant energy waste, driving up household heating and cooling costs.
3. Poor sound insulation performance
The windows aren’t soundproof, which affects sleep and quality of life—especially for residents living near markets or busy roads, who could really benefit from a pair of soundproof windows.
4. Not UV-resistant
Ordinary doors and windows can't block ultraviolet rays, leading over time to the aging and fading of indoor furniture, clothing, and books.
A Guide to Home Window Replacement
Window installation is a renovation project that demands a high level of craftsmanship and meticulous attention to detail from workers—any mistakes during the process can easily lead to issues like leaks or water seepage later on. And once problems arise, fixing them isn’t exactly straightforward, often leaving homeowners frustrated and overwhelmed. To help you avoid this hassle, it’s strongly recommended that homeowners take some time to familiarize themselves with the key considerations before installing windows in their homes.
Sharpening your knife doesn’t delay chopping wood—get your window installation preparations right first.
Step 1: Check if the window is qualified.
Windows must undergo inspection and acceptance upon arrival. First, a visual inspection is carried out to check for any damage or breakage. Second, dimensional verification is performed to ensure the frame’s four-sided dimensions meet specifications, as well as to confirm that the sash is square and free from warping—this step helps achieve quality control before installation.
Next, inspect fasteners, hardware components, reinforcing profiles, and metal backing plates to ensure their surfaces have been treated with anti-corrosion protection. If fixing clips are used for installation, the clips must be at least 1.5 mm thick and have a minimum width of 15 mm—or greater—while their surfaces should undergo galvanization for added durability.
Step 2: Inspect the window openings
To ensure windows have excellent sealing and stability, paying attention to evenness during installation is crucial. And maintaining that evenness hinges on properly preparing the window opening. Before installing the window, double-check that the opening dimensions are accurate and that it’s perfectly aligned horizontally and vertically—address any openings that don’t meet these standards beforehand.
Step 3: Remove the old windows
Many homeowners are replacing their old windows with new ones, so the first step is to remove the existing windows. Window removal requires careful handling to avoid damaging the surrounding décor and wall structures during the process. Generally speaking, wooden windows are relatively easy to take down, while plastic-steel and aluminum windows tend to be more complex to remove.
First, use a blade to carefully cut through the sealant and other materials on the inside of the window, then remove the window frame. If the window is attached to the wall using expansion bolts, simply unscrew them with a screwdriver. If the bolts are rusted, you can use an impact drill to break them apart. For windows secured with connecting plates, an impact drill will suffice. However, if the frame doesn’t come off easily, use a hacksaw to cut through the middle section of the frame where it’s in contact with the wall, allowing you to detach it completely.
When installing new doors and windows, it's best to hire skilled professionals from a reputable company to avoid potential issues and hidden problems after installation.
