In home renovation projects, balcony enclosure is typically carried out—especially for those living on the ground floor of apartment buildings, where balcony treatment is even more essential. Enclosing a balcony can achieve the following benefits:

First and foremost, there’s safety: Sealing the balcony adds an extra layer of protection to your home. In areas where public security isn’t strong enough to ensure doors stay locked at night—and even during the day—this additional safeguard creates a significant barrier for potential criminals, effectively serving as a deterrent against crime.
Second is hygiene: After the balcony is enclosed, an additional layer of dust-blocking windows helps prevent windblown sand, dust, and rain from entering, resulting in better indoor cleanliness compared to rooms with unenclosed balconies.
Third, the usage scope has been expanded: In situations where living space is particularly limited, a enclosed balcony can serve as a versatile area for activities like working, reading, storing items, or even exercising—and it can even be used directly as additional living space. Compared to an unenclosed balcony, this creates more diverse functional possibilities and significantly boosts the usable area of the home.
Fourth, it broadened design perspectives: After the balcony is enclosed, the indoor space can be seamlessly integrated by removing the door-and-window partition. This approach allows for more thoughtful, holistic planning during the design process—especially in irregularly shaped rooms, where enclosing the balcony becomes an effective strategy for creating a cohesive, well-organized layout that maximizes the potential of the unique space.
  1. Forms of balcony enclosure
From a structural perspective, there are two types of balcony enclosures. One involves sealing it off with an anti-theft mesh screen, which only provides security against burglary but offers no additional benefits. This method can be used when living conditions are relatively spacious. The other type seals the balcony in the form of windows, and this approach is by far the most common.
There are generally two most commonly used window opening styles: casement windows and sliding windows. With the continuous advancement of building materials, we now also see all-glass frameless balcony windows, folding balcony windows, as well as fully open framed windows, among others.
  2. Balcony Window Profiles
Typical balcony enclosure materials include PVC profiles, standard aluminum alloy profiles, and thermal-break aluminum alloy profiles.
Plastic-steel profiles were quite popular a few years ago, but nowadays fewer people choose them—largely because of the widespread availability of counterfeit and substandard materials, combined with their poor weather resistance.
Common aluminum alloy profiles exhibit excellent weather resistance and anti-aging properties. When selecting materials, be sure to choose those with a wall thickness of at least 1.2 mm. If the balcony exceeds 4 meters in length or 2.8 meters in height, it’s best to reinforce the structure with connecting tubes in the middle to enhance its wind-pressure resistance. However, due to aluminum’s high thermal conductivity, these profiles don’t offer particularly good insulation performance.
Aluminum alloy profiles with thermal breaks: The principle behind thermally broken aluminum alloys is to insert a thermal insulation strip into the center of the aluminum profile, effectively "breaking" the continuous aluminum structure and creating a barrier against heat transfer—thus preventing heat from easily flowing through. This design offers excellent rigidity, high strength, superior resistance to atmospheric corrosion, and outstanding thermal insulation properties. Additionally, these profiles come in a wide range of colors, allowing manufacturers to produce windows and doors with two distinct finishes—internal and external—which not only enhance aesthetic appeal but also ensure long-lasting durability.

  3. Balcony Window Glass
There are several types of glass available for balcony glazing, categorized by thickness as 4mm, 5mm, 6mm, 8mm, 10mm, and 12mm. In terms of glass types, you’ll find options like clear float glass, tempered glass, insulated glass, laminated glass, and coated glass, among others. Balcony windows typically use tempered glass due to its high strength—plus, even if it breaks, it’s less likely to cause injury. Naturally, the price varies significantly depending on the type of glass chosen for your balcony windows. Customers can freely select and combine different glass options based on their specific needs and budget.
