In regions with hot summers and cold winters, window and door designs must balance winter heat retention with summer solar shading. Meanwhile, in areas with hot summers and mild winters, energy-efficient window and door designs should primarily focus on providing effective summer shading.
In regions with hot summers and mild winters, heat entering indoor spaces through building exterior windows is primarily due to solar radiation—specifically, the heat gain from glass surfaces that account for about 80% of the window area. Next comes heat transfer via air infiltration through gaps in doors and windows, followed by heat conducted through the window frames themselves.
Solar radiation significantly impacts building energy consumption, as heat gain through exterior windows due to solar radiation is far greater than that caused by temperature differences. Therefore, selecting appropriate shading solutions is crucial for energy savings during the summer months. In this article, we categorize shading systems into external shading, window-mounted shading, and interior window shading.
I. Exterior Sunshades
Using exterior window shading is an effective measure that works for windows facing all directions; it typically involves movable shades, such as retractable roller blinds or adjustable louvers, among other options.
External shading can block nearly all solar radiation, meaning that the heat entering the exterior window is limited to only the portion of solar energy absorbed by the roller blinds or exterior louvers and subsequently transferred indoors.
2. Center-Window Sunshades
Window-mounted central shading systems are typically positioned between the two panes of double glazing, seamlessly integrated into the window unit as a cohesive whole—often pre-fabricated and produced entirely at the factory. Because they reside inside the glass layers and remain largely shielded from dust and other contaminants, these central shades are easy to maintain and tend to suffer fewer damages over time.
However, while this type of shading can block solar radiation passing through the glass, it cannot prevent the temperature of the glass and profile surfaces from rising due to direct sunlight.
Experimental data shows that under summer sunlight and in an ambient air temperature of 35°C, the surface temperature of aluminum alloy profiles can reach up to 52°C. This heat can directly transfer into indoor spaces, significantly increasing air conditioning energy consumption.
3. Window Interior Shading
Internal shading primarily involves selecting fabrics and colors based on residents' personal preferences, with little consideration given to energy-saving requirements. Compared to other methods, curtains for shading are more flexible and allow users to easily adjust the most suitable opening style according to seasonal and weather changes—plus, they’re less vulnerable to external damage.
The main types include: Venetian blinds, vertical blinds, and roller shades, among others. As for materials, they vary widely—ranging from fabric, plastic, and metal to bamboo and wood.
When this type of setup is used, solar radiation passes through the glass, causing the indoor curtains themselves to absorb heat and warm up. This heat has effectively entered the room, and a significant portion will further raise the indoor temperature via convection and radiation—ultimately leading to a substantial increase in air conditioning energy consumption.
As shown in the comparison above, from the perspective of summer energy savings, external shading systems offer the best energy-saving performance, as they can completely block solar radiation.
