As summer approaches, if you don’t properly care for your home’s doors, windows, door handles, and other small "hardware" items, by the time summer is over, you’ll notice that these little pieces have lost their former shine, faded under the scorching sunlight.

Door and window hardware is the very soul of interior doors, encompassing components like handles, lock mechanisms, hinges, and more. Though small in size, these elements play a crucial role. Ultimately, the longevity of your interior door depends heavily on how well you maintain its "hardware."
Stainless steel handles and other stainless steel "hardware" can be wiped clean with a polish to enhance their shine.
Hinge, gliding wheels, casters, and other moving parts may experience reduced performance over time due to dust accumulation. Applying one or two drops of lubricant every six months or so can help keep them operating smoothly.
Pay special attention to the direction in which the handle is rotated and stretched—avoid using excessive force. It’s especially important to educate children not to hang onto door handles and swing from them, as this not only poses a safety risk but could also damage interior doors.
Additionally, if the lock cylinder doesn’t turn smoothly enough, you can gently scrape a small amount of black powder from a pencil lead and lightly blow it into the keyhole. This works because the graphite in the pencil lead acts as an excellent solid lubricant. However, avoid dripping any oil-based lubricants into the lock, as this will actually make it even easier for dust to stick around.
