Do you avoid opening your windows in winter because you feel too cold? Are you used to opening them only in the early morning or late evening? Or perhaps you stick to opening them just once a day? Actually, all these habits are wrong! Come join us—let’s learn the right way to open your windows together!
1× Misconception 1: Avoiding opening windows because it's cold
√The right approach: Turn it on—even if it’s cold.
In winter, the temperature outside is often too low. Many people keep their windows almost closed to stay warm. Yet, thanks to Warren’s highly airtight doors and windows—which offer excellent soundproofing and insulation—most folks end up shutting their windows, lounging comfortably on their couches at home while watching TV.
However, under normal conditions, a person breathes out about 22 liters of carbon dioxide per hour; during intense physical activity, that number can soar to as much as 80 liters per hour. If ventilation remains poor, the CO₂ we exhale will accumulate indoors, potentially harming our health over time.
That’s why it’s still essential—even in winter—to open your windows regularly. After all, Mom’s old advice really does hold true!
2×Misconception #2: Opening windows once in the morning and once in the evening
√ The right approach: Opening windows is best between 10:00 am and 3:00 pm.
Many people are accustomed to opening windows before heading to work in the morning and again when they return home in the evening. However, research shows that in most cities, air pollution peaks occur around sunrise and sunset—making these the least ideal times to open windows. On the other hand, the two periods when air quality tends to be cleaner are typically around 10 a.m. and 3 p.m., so it’s recommended that everyone make a point of opening their windows during these times.
3×Misconception #3: You only need to do it once a day
√ Correct approach: ≥2 times, ≥15 minutes
The timing and frequency of window ventilation throughout the day can be adjusted based on factors such as home size, number of occupants, daily living habits, indoor air pollution levels, and weather conditions. Although winters are cold, it’s still essential to open windows for ventilation at least twice a day, each time for no less than 15 minutes. For instance, in a space of 100 cubic meters, under windless conditions with a 20°C temperature difference between indoors and outdoors, fresh air will typically circulate completely within about 10–15 minutes.
However, you should also be prepared to open windows based on the weather conditions—for example, when it’s windy, pollutants tend to disperse more easily, resulting in better air quality. In such cases, it’s fine to open the windows more frequently. But on cloudy days, pollutants struggle to dissipate, and under certain conditions, photochemical smog—a harmful pale-blue haze—may even form. That’s precisely when you should avoid opening the windows altogether.
4× Misconception #4: Windows are only opened when cooking in the kitchen
√ The right approach: Always open a window whenever you use the stove.
Nowadays, almost every household uses a range hood, but some people only turn it on—and open a window—when stir-frying. Yet when boiling water or simmering soups, they either skip the range hood altogether or fail to open a window. In fact, even when simply boiling water, if you don’t use a range hood or ventilate by opening a window, the harmful fumes from gas appliances can easily accumulate in the kitchen and spread into living rooms and bedrooms.
However, exhaust gases from gas appliances are harmful to human health and can even lead to poisoning in severe cases. Therefore, when using gas—whether cooking or otherwise—it’s essential to open a window or turn on the range hood.
