"Secret Makeover" | Warren and Pan Ran Team Up to Create a "Bookish Haven" for抗疫 Heroes

Release date:

2025-09-01

When designer Pan Ran meets抗疫 hero Fu Siyun, how will he transform Fu Siyun’s “Bookish Home” within the tight 14-day deadline?

Before the renovation, the kitchen was an open-plan layout, and cooking always left the entire room filled with smoky fumes and grease. To securely install the range hood, a brick wall was constructed to close off one of the windows, blocking both light and the line of sight.

After the renovation, the kitchen’s workflow was streamlined, and ample new storage space was added. Kitchen appliances were upgraded with state-of-the-art technology and seamlessly integrated into the design, creating a cohesive and modern aesthetic. The existing bonsai planting area was also enhanced, further complemented by the horizontally extending window lattice, which helps cultivate a tranquil and inviting ambiance. Additionally, a sleek, transparent sliding door was installed between the kitchen and dining area, effectively reducing the spread of cooking fumes to other parts of the home.

When designer Pan Ran meets抗疫 hero Fu Siyun, how will he transform Fu Siyun’s "Bookish Home" within the tight 14-day deadline?

Fu Siyun puts everyone else before her own family. The family lives in a modest 54-square-meter, two-bedroom apartment where ventilation is poor, natural light is insufficient, indoor noise levels are high, storage space is limited, and the flow of movement within the home is inefficient—leading to numerous daily inconveniences that urgently need addressing.

No.1 Master Bedroom

Before the renovation, the master bedroom faced the street, resulting in significant noise and dust. To block out the dust, a mosquito net was necessary. Dr. Fu and his wife both enjoyed reading before bed, so they needed a quiet, peaceful environment.

After the renovation, the master bedroom’s layout was subtly adjusted to create extensive storage space along the walls, neatly organizing items like clothing and bedding. The room features a single-sided bedside table and an 1800mm-wide standard-sized bed. Along the window, a tatami area is installed, complete with built-in storage underneath. A translucent lattice screen is placed between the tatami zone and the bed, offering a flexible partition that helps define a tranquil nook perfect for reading or relaxing.

No. 2 Kitchen

Before the renovation, the kitchen was open-plan, and cooking always left the entire room filled with油烟 (smoke and grease). To securely install the range hood, a brick wall was built to close off one of the windows, blocking both light and the line of sight.

After the renovation, the kitchen’s workflow was optimized, and extensive new storage space was added. Kitchen appliances were upgraded with cutting-edge technology and integrated seamlessly into the design, ensuring a cohesive and modern aesthetic. The existing bonsai planting area was also enhanced, complemented by the horizontally extending window lattice to create a serene and inviting atmosphere. Additionally, a sleek, transparent sliding door was installed between the kitchen and dining area, effectively minimizing the spread of油烟 (cooking fumes) to other parts of the home.

No. 3 Kids' room

Before the renovation, the child's study area faced the street, resulting in loud noise and direct sunlight that impaired both vision and concentration.

After the renovation, the desk is now positioned more efficiently, and a dedicated bookcase has been added, giving the child a comfortable study space. Meanwhile, the drying area has been set up on the balcony of the child’s room, taking full advantage of the room’s excellent south-facing location to seamlessly handle both drying clothes and storage needs.

Restaurant No.4

Before the renovation, there wasn’t a separate dining area—instead, a square table that could seat only three people was placed in the passage between the kitchen and the living room, making it extremely inconvenient to walk back and forth.

After the renovation, part of the restaurant was relocated, and the position of the partition walls was adjusted. The installation of mirrored walls helps enhance the sense of space, while the combination of a small dining table and a compact sofa effortlessly accommodates the daily needs of a small family.

No. 5 Bathroom

Before the renovation, the bathroom was dim and cramped, with poor ventilation. To enter the bathroom, you had to walk through the kitchen, making it extremely inconvenient for the family of three to use.

After the renovation, the designer repurposed part of the original kitchen area to create a separate toilet zone, a vanity area, and a shower area, making it convenient for the family of three. Additionally, the use of an invisible door enhances the sense of unity in the space, lending it a sleek and elegant aesthetic.

After the renovation, Fu Siyun’s home has transformed into a cozy "bookish haven," where the designer seamlessly integrated reading into every corner of life, perfectly catering to the family’s shared love for books. The chaotic flow of movement in the dining area, kitchen, and bathroom has been carefully reorganized, ensuring that each space functions efficiently and purposefully. Meanwhile, dust and noise are now effectively kept at bay, while sunlight streams warmly through the windows, filling the home with an atmosphere of warmth and sweetness.
